I switched back to a MacBook Air recently — the 15-inch M5, 24GB — and within a day I’d opened a resource monitor out of habit. Memory usage was sitting high with barely anything running, so I did the old thing and went looking for whatever was eating it.

Nothing was. That was the system working exactly as designed, and it sent me down a worthwhile rabbit hole.

That reflex — glance at memory, question it when it climbs — is Windows muscle memory. I’ve spent most of my career on Windows, and like plenty of its users I still keep half an eye on Task Manager, especially on Windows 11, which has a well-earned reputation for feeling heavier with every update. When a machine genuinely bogs down as memory fills, you learn to treat a high number as something to check. The trouble is the habit doesn’t travel: on a modern system, a full memory bar usually means the OS is doing its job, not failing at it.

What that number really means

Every modern operating system treats free RAM as wasted RAM. Windows, Linux, and macOS all take the memory you aren’t using and fill it with disk cache — files and data staged in RAM so the next read is instant instead of hitting storage. The moment a program actually needs that memory, the OS hands it back. Linux folks have said it for decades: unused RAM is wasted RAM. It was never an Apple idea. It’s just good engineering, and everyone does it.

What differs is what each OS shows you. Linux hides the truth in free behind a cache column. Windows splits it into in-use, cached, and standby. Apple pushed the raw numbers into the background and put a single Memory Pressure gauge up front — green, yellow, red. The message is blunt and, honestly, correct: stop watching how much RAM is “used” and watch whether the system is actually under strain. Mine stays green while it happily uses most of the 24GB. That’s the point.

The RAM disk detour

Years ago on Windows I played with RAM disks — carving out a chunk of memory and mounting it as a virtual drive for absurd read and write speeds. It was genuinely fast and almost completely impractical. I never found a real use for it and quietly dropped it.

The irony only landed now: I’d been hand-building a worse version of something the OS already does for free. The page cache is the sane, automatic RAM disk — all your spare memory working as fast storage, with none of the babysitting.

Where the balance actually is

I’ll give Apple credit here — not because macOS does something Windows and Linux can’t (under the hood they all cache, compress, and swap), but because Apple made it legible and low-drama. One gauge, aggressive memory compression, fast SSD swap, and you simply stop thinking about it.

The catch is the balance. “Use all the RAM” is free right up until your working set outgrows the physical chips. Then compression and swap stop being invisible, pressure turns red, and you feel every bit of it. That’s why the base spec still matters — and why Apple, after years of shipping 8GB and insisting it was plenty, finally moved the floor to 16GB once its own AI features stopped fitting.

So the number that had me digging was just the machine doing its job. Full RAM isn’t the problem; empty RAM is the waste. The only line worth watching is the one between used for cache and actually out — and macOS, to its credit, draws it where you can see it.
